How We Work

The Developing Belief Network team consists of close to 100 researchers, comprised of over 40 primary researchers (faculty and postdoctoral scholars) and including research assistants, staff, and students from more than 24 universities around the world.  We follow the best practices of open science and team science

Lead PIs steer the network at the highest level.

Our Lead PIs identify potential topics of study, secure funding and administering grants, select research teams to be part of the network, convene network-wide meetings, and guide the network through the challenges and rewards of collaborative research.

The Core Leadership Team facilitates our iterative and collaborative approach to large-scale, multi-site, culturally-informed research.

The Core Leadership Team develops and implements network-wide guidelines for:

  • Collaboration (e.g. authorship guidelines)

  • Centralized and standard processes for research protocols, data-cleaning, data storage and sharing, transcription, and coding of participants’ responses.

This team convenes regular meetings with Fieldsite PIs and research teams to:

  • Develop and refine new research questions

  • Design research protocols

  • Provide oversight, guidance, and support for data collection

  • Provide financial oversight and administration for grant awards.

Field Site PIs lead research teams and implement DBN research protocols in specific cultural and geographic  settings.

Field Site PIs:

  • Consult with cultural experts and community members

  • Translate and adapt research protocols

  • Lead data collection efforts in the field.

Field Site PIs and research teams also:

  • Play a primary role in developing and refining research questions and research protocols for the network

  • Meet regularly with the Lead PIs and Core Leadership Team to discuss the goals of the network and designing protocols to address those goals.

The Advisory Board consists of senior faculty members external to the network who advise the Lead PIs and Core Leadership Team.

Advisory Board Members advise the Lead PIs and Core Leadership Team on the many challenges inherent to large-scale, multi-site, culturally informed research, such as:

  • How to design clear and equitable authorship and data sharing policies and procedures

  •  How to adapt research protocols for use in such a diverse range of cultural settings.

Advisory Board Members were also actively involved during the initial fieldsite selection and subaward process.
