The Developing Belief Network is funded by the John Templeton Foundation, with additional support from the University of California, Riverside and Boston University. Fiscal hosting is provided by the University of California, Riverside.


Thanks to this financial support, the Developing Belief Network has been able to:

Establish the first international research network studying the development of belief in children. 

Provide over $4 million to 13 research teams and 4 postdoctorate and dissertation awards whose work with over 2,000 children and their families in 46 distinct cultural-religious settings.

Translate our research protocols into 14 languages and adapt them for 46 cultural-religious groups.

Collaborate to develop, assess, and revise research protocol with a consideration for multicultural contexts.

Conduct transparent and open cross-cultural, developmental science between researchers in over 19 countries.

Raise awareness of the impact of religious beliefs and practices on development.

Publish in Advances in Child Development and Behavior (2022), Annual Review of Developmental Psychology (2022), the Oxford Handbook on Cultural Evolution (2023), and PLOS One (2024).

Host pre-conference workshops at the 2022 Cognitive Development Society Meeting in Madison, WI, and the 2024 Cognitive Development Society Meeting in Pasadena, CA as well as host an annual full-network meeting for DBN Field PIs and postdoctoral researchers.

Support the development of a mobile research app at Harvard University that captures natural conversations between children and caregivers.
